Our Intent
We want every child at Spring Lane to leave fully prepared for the next stage of their life and to succeed in the 21st Century. As such, the curriculum at Spring Lane provides all students with a firm grasp of reading, writing and mathematics which are a focus during our morning lessons.
We believe children need skills in these core subjects to fully access the wider curriculum areas. Wherever relevant, we make links between mathematics and English and other curriculum areas.
As a school, we model and instill a passion for reading for all of our learners as reading is the gateway to lifelong learning.
Our Implementation
We have carefully considered our curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of all pupils under our care. Each year, the teaching and learning of the National Curriculum is delivered through subject-specific learning focused around a termly topic. These topics are used as the vehicle for learning and links are made across the curriculum.
The structure and content of the curriculum is mapped out in our long-term, short term and medium-term planning documents. Our long-term plans detail how the curriculum is structured and sequenced for subjects which outline the progression of knowledge and skills across the school and link learning to other curriculum areas. As a useful document for subject leads and class teachers, a medium-term plan maps out the 'Learning Journey' including: the knowledge, skills, hooks, 'Stunning Starter and Fabulous Finish' and key vocabulary. Knowledge organisers supplement our medium-term plans and provide key learning for pupils in science, history and geography.
Pupils’ understanding of a topic is assessed within a lesson following a review of pupils’ work and a mid-unit quiz. A proof of progress (POP) quiz is provided to children at the end of a topic, which requires children to recall key facts, and further enhances pupils’ learning and memory. Based on educational research on how the brain works, we understand that it is vital that children have regular opportunities to recall and demonstrate their understanding of recently acquired knowledge.

Our curriculum embraces the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Need and Disability Arrangement (2014). We ensure this by:
eliminating discrimination (see the Equality Act 2010) - https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/contents
advancing equality of opportunity - between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
consulting and involving those affected by inequality, in the decisions your school takes to promote equality and eliminate discrimination (affected people could include parents, pupils, staff and members of the local community).
