Here at Spring Lane Primary, we believe that a quality, well-delivered PSHE curriculum is at the forefront in equipping our pupils to be happy, healthy and responsible members of society. Our broad, well-balanced spiral curriculum offers a range of learning experiences that provide our pupils with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully tackle the social, moral and cultural issues that face the children growing-up in their local environment. Our PSHE curriculum encompasses our school values through three key themes: Happiness, Life Skills and Safety.
As part of our school’s Personal, Social and Health Education programme, all children should receive lessons on relationships and sex. The purpose of Relationships and Sex Education is to provide knowledge and understanding of our relationships with others, understand how we grow and change as we get older and how to keep ourselves clean and healthy. From Y4 onwards, this will include how the human body changes during puberty and the processes of human reproduction, within the context of relationships based on love and respect. We believe that if young people can start their transition into adulthood with good information and the confidence and knowledge to understand what is happening to them, they will grow into confident and healthy adults able to make positive choices. This can start with learning the basics about growing up and the sessions in school may reinforce what you are already doing at home.
Our PSHE curriculum, while covering the National Curriculum, aims to excite the children and allow them to develop their own skills as valued citizens of society.
PSHE is incorporated within other curriculum subjects such as English, Art, DT, Geography and History. The skills that are developed in our PSHE allow the children to grow as people and learners.
This allows strong cross curricular links to be made between subject to ensure the children have many occasions where by they can apply their knowledge and understanding. Regular opportunities to develop the children’s Personal, Social and Health education are given a variety of situations.
Assessment of PSHE is conducted by class teachers using children’s work, class discussions and conversations recorded on seesaw. This assessment is regular and informs planning for future lessons.
